摘要 | Underground water with high salinity erodes and damages hydraulic concrete constructions in irrigation regions. This is one of the prime factors that have great impacts on water conveyance projects and safe operations in irrigation regions. Through field investigations and experimental analyses of the eroded constructions in typical irrigation regions, this paper probes into the underground water sulfate corrosion mechanism of hydraulic concrete constructions in irrigation regions. The experimental analysis indicates that the rich sulfate of underground water is one of the prime mediums that erode hydraulic concrete constructions in irrigation regions. The field investigations show that all the severely eroded constructions have obvious characteristics of sulfate corrosion. The theoretical analyses and experimental researches indicate that the major sulfate corrosion mechanism is the chemical reaction of the sulfate (Na2SO4, MgSO4 and CaSO4, etc.) in underground water that touches the buildings and some unstable or metastable matters within concrete such as Ca(OH)2, C3A and 3CaO·SiO2·3H2O, etc. The reactions generate new stable matter and the volume swells resulting in the inner stress concentration in concrete constructions and finally the destruction of structure. © 2014 CAFET-INNOVA TECHNICAL SOCIETY.
