摘要 | A 3 mm thick AZ31B magnesium sheet is lapped by friction stir spot welding (FSSW) to a 1 mm thick DP600 galvanised steel sheet. This is carried out without any keyhole under an optimal welding condition. A good joint of 8?7 kN strength is measured. The microstructure of welding joint is analysed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscopy, showing that steel is stirred into magnesium. The phenomenon is similar to a 'nail' embedded in the magnesium, with steel and magnesium completely mixed. Beside the metal compound formed between Fe and Al element, X-ray diffraction identifies intermetallic compounds formed between Mg and Al, Mg and Zn elements. Therefore, it is concluded that magnesium steel by FSSW without keyhole is governed by a mechanical connection, followed by metallurgical combine. © 2014 W. S. Maney & Son Ltd. |
