The region of Zhouqu and Wudu in the Gansu province,China, experiences some of the most intense debris-flow-related disasters, such as landslide and mudslides,in the world. The intensity of these events is attributed to the underlying Silurian slate lithology, which undergoes thaw-freeze and wet-dry weathering. In addition, the climate in this region, these processes to alternate, which intensify the weathering of the slate. We select typical moderate weathering slate as the object of study and apply field investigation, sampling and some experiment to study the physical deterioration of slate using field photograph, varying quality variations, elastic velocity,stress-strain curves, and uniaxial compressive strength. These tests were carried out following varying numbers of cycles of thaw-freeze,wet-dry weathering, and alternating cycles of these two weathering processes.
