Fracture design of medium carbon steel with extra-low cyclic fatigue under cantilever bending and torsional loading

摘要In order to study the ultra low cycle fatigue fracture parameters and fracture mechanism of the medium carbon steel under cantilever bending and torsional loading, fatigue lifetime of the notched specimens with different notch tip radius were tested by using electro-hydraulic high-frequency fatigue test machine with a special fixture for cantilever bending and torsional loading. The morphology of the fatigue fracture was observed by means of SEM. The results show that the optimum parameters for the fracture design are as follow: the tip radius of notch is 0.1-0.3 mm and the ratio of the notch depth to the specimen diameter, t/b, is 0.075 for the designed samples. Fractography analysis show that multiple fatigue crack originations are observed, and the mode I crack plays the leading role under the fracture surface cantilever bending and torsional loading for the crack propagation. Secondary cracks, tear ridges and fatigue striations exist on the propagation area of the tested specimen fracture surface. ©, 2015, Editorial Office of Transactions of Materials and Heat Treatment.
